Ahhh... the plottiness of it all.
Or maybe not. The premise for the story started out simple enough...but as with many things, grew out of
control(and into a webcomic). Before long, a whole plot was unfolding.
It began with the vague idea of a 'reluctant hero'. Oh, he's not reluctant to do the right thing,
not at all. That is, not when it comes to 'King and Country'.
But Gerith (that's him in the picture) was concieved of as a young man who got rather
tied up in knots when presented with personal quandries
to overcome.
Therein lies his reluctancy. And it sets the stage for the entire rest of the story.
The story begins with the elves of the Illyson Sheas finding a shipwreck on their beaches--of which
Gerith is the only survivor.
He is gravely injured--but don't let it be said that the elves can't mend far better than their mortal cousins.
And because the healer priest Arllynaitheryn is a bit of a
hobbyist with regards to human lore and language--he is given the charge of taking care of wayward Gerith.
Now Gerith's wits were scrambled a bit, though he knows he was about something important, something vital.
He just can't remember what it is, at the moment. And while he convalesces, his
attentions are distracted nicely from his problematical memory by the attractive, if odd, Arllynaitheryn.
(who prefers to be called "Arllyn" by friends)
Arllyn is rather surprised to find that the attraction runs both ways, but takes it all in stride.
Arllyn is apt to do so, being rather even tempered. And all goes well as it can, for a while.
That is until Arllyn's current lover, the prince of the Isles, lets slip to poor besotted Gerith
that Arllyn isn't for human...uhmm...consumption. Prince Calyndhayn(Ca-lan-dān) informs Gerith that his
lover is a rather
prized elf, in that Arllyn is perfected by their standards. It is then that Gerith finds out that Arllyn is a
correct hermaphrodite--neither male nor female, but equally both. Prince Calyndhayn is at least somewhat aware of the limitations of
human tolerance for such things and informs Gerith in hopes that his human prejudices will warn him off any romantic interest in Arllyn.
And it has just that effect. As Arllyn tries to help Gerith regain his memory as quickly as
possible, Gerith distances himself from the elf he had begun to desire in earnest.
Confused and
more than a little hurt, Arllyn still stays with the project, attempting to salvage at least a friendship
out of the situation.
And Gerith seems amenable, if reluctantly so.
But before
long, Gerith decides that having regained the memory of why he was at sea or not, he must return home.
And Arllyn decides to go with him. Gerith is less than pleased, but he can hardly
stop Arllyn, and soon they are upon the main continent together, embroiled in stopping a
politcal coup to put the Viceroy of Gerith's home in power permanently.
